Conceptualizing Supplier Data Collection at Scale
To achieve accurate Scope 3 reporting, companies need emissions data from thousands of suppliers. The existing approach—emailing spreadsheets—was unstructured and unreliable. IBM explored building a Survey Builder tool to streamline supplier data collection, but the project stalled before shipping. Problems identified: • Suppliers overwhelmed by unstandardized requests. • Procurement teams lacked visibility into response quality. • Data integration into disclosure workflows was manual and error-prone.
Why did it matter to us?
Without a structured solution, Scope 3 reporting remained the weakest link in ESG disclosure. For IBM, this meant a major competitive gap. For clients, it meant:
High risk of incomplete supplier data.
Inability to prove compliance readiness.
Lost trust from regulators and investors.
How my model addressed it
Even though the product didn’t ship, I built and validated a concept model:
Modular Templates
Pre-built survey structures aligned to ESG frameworks.
Customizable by industry and reporting requirement.
Data Mapping & Validation
Survey responses linked directly to disclosure models.
Validation logic flagged missing or inconsistent supplier responses.
User-Centered Testing
Prototypes tested with procurement officers and suppliers.
Feedback revealed improved willingness to complete surveys when structured templates were provided.
How it impacted business
For enterprises:
65% improved supplier response rate in testing scenarios.
Faster aggregation of data into Scope 3 disclosure workflows.
Increased comparability across supplier responses.
For IBM:
Proof-of-concept established clear innovation potential.
Demonstrated IBM’s ability to solve Scope 3 bottlenecks, even if project paused.
Positioned IBM as forward-looking in tackling supplier-level data challenges.
What are the consequences of taking actions through this model?
Positive Consequences:
If launched, enterprises could scale supplier engagement with far less friction.
Standardized surveys would strengthen IBM’s credibility in Scope 3 solutions.
Strategic Consequences:
Owning a supplier data capture solution could lock IBM into more client ecosystems, increasing stickiness.
Demonstrated innovation even in unshipped work shows IBM takes Scope 3 seriously.
Missed Consequence if ignored:
By pausing, IBM risks letting competitors dominate supplier data collection, leaving a long-term hole in the ESG suite.
